235 Sam Michaels Dr, Shenandoah Junction, WV
The Outdoor Education Center of For Love of Children and Jefferson County Parks and Recreation are excited to announce the 3rd annual “Sam Michaels 5K Obstacle Challenge” race, on Saturday, April 11, 2015. In addition to a line-up of muddy, endurance-testing obstacles, “Sam Michael’s 5K”, a Civil War-themed event, is a unique event inspired by the area’s rich history. Led out of the starting gate by the shot of a cannon and cavalry on horse, participants will race among re-enacting soldiers and cavalrymen as they hurdle over obstacles named after the various historical markers in the region.
The Jefferson County Parks and Recreation Team first realized their knack for putting on races with the debut of the Halloweeny Warrior Dash in 2011, the race has continued to be a wild success, alongside the efforts of The Outdoor Education Center of For Love of Children and Dr. Mark Cucuzzella.
Using the area’s unique history and love of a challenge, “Sam Michael’s 5K” race committee members have created an event for all ages and competitive levels. We created this race to break from tradition and appeal to people who are not necessarily everyday runners or athletes, but individuals who want to push themselves in a fun and safe, yet still physically demanding environment. This event combines the competitive edge of a traditional race, but with an adventurous, fun-natured obstacle course with a focus on our local history.
The event will benefit the efforts of two local non-profit organizations: the Jefferson County Parks and Recreation Commission (JCPRC) and its mission to provide diverse year-round opportunities by creating and providing recreation, leisure and community services necessary to promote and improve the overall quality of life for the citizens of Jefferson County, West Virginia; and The Outdoor Education Center of For Love of Children (OEC of FLOC) with a mission to facilitate healthy character development for youth and adults in a powerful outdoor classroom.
