BACKGROUND
What is a challenge race?
A challenge race is a race that breaks from the traditional monotony of regular races. Challenge races include obstacles that can be demanding and even a little dangerous. As with any physical competition there is an assumption of risk for all participants.
Why Sam Michaels Obstacle Challenge Race?
Jefferson County was the battle ground for the Civil War. Cavalrymen bravely led the charge for soldiers into battle. What better way to show off how kick butt you can be than to compete with civil war soldiers and cavalry on horseback!
REGISTRATION DETAILS
Where do I register?

What is the deadline for registration?
Online registration will close Wednesday, April 8, 2015. If there are still spaces available, you may register at the packet pick up on Friday, April, 10, 4:00-8:00pm.
We will also have race day registration Saturday, April 11, 7:00-8:30 am at Sam Michael’s Park. Please note there is a limit of 300 runners. Only the first 300 registrants will be eligible to participate. No Exceptions.
How do I make sure that I am registered?
There will be a list of “Who’s coming” on the webpage as we get closer to race day.
What is included with registration?
Registration includes your bib number, t-shirt, and race packet information. Registration also includes insurance fees.
Why do I have to pay an insurance fee?
As with any physical competition, there is an assumption of risk for all participants. The insurance not only protects the park, but also you – the participant. Do I have to sign a waiver to participate? Yes, the waiver you sign signifies you understand the risks associated with challenge races.
Who can enter Sam Michael’s 5K?
Due to the assumption of risk with events of this nature, runners must be 13 years of age or older; however, there will be a kids fun- run following the challenge race at 10:30am. This is a free, non-competitive, short sprint for kids aged 6 and up.
Can I register with a team?
Teams and camaraderie are encouraged; however, Sam Michael’s 5K is an individually timed event. Winners are based off of individual times.
Where is packet pick-up, and when?
Packet pick-up will be located at Sam Michael’s Park Friday, April 10, 2015 from 4:00 – 8:00pm and 7:00am – 8:30am Race Day, April 11. Go to About for directions
Can I transfer my registration to another person or roll over my registration to the next year?
There are absolutely no transfers, rollovers, or refunds given for any reason, including medical reasons.
Can I register Day-of-Race?
If there are still spaces available, you may register at the packet pick up on Friday, April, 10, from 4-8:00pm.
We will have race day registration Saturday, April 11, from 7:00-8:30 am at Sam Michael’s Park.
Please note there is a limit of 300 runners. Only the first 300 registrants will be eligible to participate. No Exceptions
What happens if I am unable to participate in the event after I register?
There are no refunds….consider it a donation to our partner non-profit organizations.
Can someone else pick up my packet?
Yes. We go by the honor system here.
RUNNER’S INFORMATION
How many runners are allowed to participate?
Due to facility limitations, the race is limited to 300 runners.
What happens if I become injured after I enter and cannot participate?
There are no medical comps, rollovers or refunds, nor can you transfer your registration to another person. Consider it a donation to our partner non-profit organizations.
Do I have to have experience running challenge races?
No, the race is for all running and skill levels. There will be 2 “Heats” designated for skill levels, please sign up for the appropriate heat when registering.
Can I walk the course?
Yes!! See below for details on start times and how long the course is open.
Where are good locations to cheer?
Staff members and volunteers will be available on site to direct spectators to safe areas to watch.
Is there a medical tent at the finish?
Yes. There is a medical tent with trained professionals and EMT support.
What is the time limit for completing the events?
The kids’ fun run will begin at 12:30am, deconstruction of the course will take place immediately after the kid’s race.
Are the miles marked?
Yes. We will have signs at each mile.
What do the different skill level heats mean?
There are 2 types of heats, Competitive and Non-Competitive
Non-Competitive are running the race with the intent of having fun and trying only the obstacles they feel are worth trying, there is no penalty for skipping obstacles.
If you would like to challenger yourself in the second heat, you can at least try every obstacle. If you fail to complete an obstacle, you must do 10 jumping jacks – this is based off of the honor system.
Competitive are competing for time. If Experts fail to complete an obstacle, you must do 10 push-ups. Volunteers will be at every obstacle to ensure you are completing the obstacle or finishing your push ups!
What should I wear to the event?
Weather in April can vary. Make sure to wear weather appropriate clothing, and a change of clothes for after.
Will I get dirty?
That depends… do you want to get dirty? We will have designated mud obstacles, and even if you try to avoid the mud obstacles just remember April showers bring mud flowers!

RACE DAY
Where is the race?
Sam Michael’s Park located at 235 Sam Michael’s Lane, Shenandoah Junction, WV. Go to the “About” section to view directions.
Where do I park?
We will have plenty of parking available with volunteers helping direct you where to go.
What are the start times of the events?
There are 2 heats, 9:00am and 9:30am
The first heat, “Competitive” will begin at 9:00am, which will be timed and competitive – individuals who wish to compete at this level will be required to at least try every obstacle.
The next heat, “Non-Competitive” will begin at 9:30am, this heat will be timed, but not strict with obstacles. This heat is recommended for individuals who have never tried an obstacle race.
What are the breakdown of competitive levels at each heat?
9:00am –Competitive Racer
9:30am - Non- Competitive Racer
Is there a place I can drop off my belongings during the event?
Yes. We will have a bag check tent at the start/finish area.
CAN I BRING MY…?
Can I bring my MP3 player?
The answer is a qualified yes; however, there will be mud and challenging obstacles that can possibly break the device. We do not encourage headphone use during races but do not disallow them as long as they are used safely. We will allow headsets on the course only if it does not pose a safety risk. For safety reasons, it may be necessary for a course official to ask you to remove your headset/earphones during the race. You are required to comply or face disqualification and removal from the course. Jefferson County Parks and Recreation is not responsible for any loss or damages to the device.
Can I bring my baby in a stroller/jogger?
Yes, for spectator purposes only. Due to the uneven trail features of the course strollers and baby joggers are not allowed on the course.
Can a non-registered friend pace me?
No, our permits and insurance only allow registered members on the course.

PRICING
How much does it cost?
$35.00 if you register before February 20, 2015.
$40.00 if you register before March 20, 2015
$45.00 if you register before April 10.
Online registration will close after April 8, 2015. If available you will be able to register April 10, 2015 at packet pick up from 4:00pm – 8:00pm, and race day from 7:00 – 8:30am.
In person registration will be $50.00.

Because Sam Michael’s park is a government property, alcohol is not permitted on property; however, there are several wonderful restaurants and pubs to enjoy in Jefferson County.
